The Latest Big Dream Boulevard Review

This album came out last year, but it's so good that I wanted to make sure nobody missed it. German-born, Boston-based Antje is one of the best emerging singer-songwriters out there, and in my opinion really deserves far more recognition and bigger audiences. She has opened for Ellis Paul and Lucy Kaplansky in Portland Oregon and I hope that next time she returns she'll have her own show so we can hear more of her (as she's truly phenomenal live). Antje has been compared often to Patty Griffin and Dar Williams, but her style and her song-writing are her own. I think those comparisons are true though, as far as where her career is going. Her songs have been covered by the legendary Irish band Solas (which is how I originally discovered her, five or so years ago), and this album was produced by Solas bandleader Seamus Egan. Big Dream Boulevard and Antje's earlier music have gotten rave reviews from around the world. Here are a few of my favorites:

"This is a brilliant, brilliant album. As far as I can tell, she's the whole package. I've had this reaction once in the past 10 years, and that was the first time I heard Patty Griffin. And the reasons are very, very similar: that package of terrific writer and singer, with the instincts to do things right, over and over and over."
  • DAVE MARSH, Rock critic and former editor of Rolling Stone

"When I first heard Antje I knew I was witnessing something very special. She creates an entire, detailed world in verse, and takes you there with beautiful and understated melody. Her songs are stunning paintings of color and shade and always generate the heat and light that real art should. In an unpoetic and 'in your face' world, she is lyrical and subtle."
  • NEIL DORFSMAN, producer (Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Dire Straits)

"German-born, American-based singer-songwriter Antje Duvekot could well emerge as the major find of 2006. This, her debut album, is the most refreshing, lyrically-impacting record I've heard in ages. A stunning debut."

"Antje's songs have a grace and sweep rarely witnessed in the modern-day canon. Her ability to render a tune harkens back to an earlier generation of songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, and the like, whose music was not just for then or now but for always. This music deserves attention."
